First Popcorn Party!

The first grade students had to work very hard as a team to earn all of the letters for a popcorn party and a 10-minute movie!  They watched a YouTube video called "Getting Along with Others - Wigglebottom Story, which helped them understand what they can do to get along with each other at recess.

The students have learned what vowels and consonants are, what sound a schwa makes, and how to read 10 direction words.  They highlight these important words when they are reading the directions to a workbook page.  They also have the actions for the floss rule, which will help them to read and spell words with a double consonant at the end of a word, such as will, hiss, puff, and fizz.  We have reviewed many of the basic sight words from kindergarten along with learning the importance of a table of contents in a text.

I have "jump started" their reading progress by introducing 14 letter clusters with pictures and actions so that they have a way to tackle words more independently each day.  They are also learning to cover up the suffixes (ed, ing, s) so that they can read a much smaller word.

We have had a great couple of weeks!
