Rhyming Time!

Our class has been reviewing the letters and their corresponding sounds for the past few weeks.  They have also been matching the capitals and lowercase letters with their partner.  The students have spent some time making words with tiles and then switching one letter at a time to show another word.  We have also been working on rhyming words.  The pictures show an activity that requires the students to match up the rhyming pictures.  Then they switched to another set of cards.

Our independent reading time has quickly became one of our favorite times in the day as we often read with a partner or to one of our "grandparent" readers from the community.  All of these activities and many more will help them feel more prepared as we start Unit 1 in reading.

In math we have been learning how to add numbers up to 5 as well as understanding what to do when the math problem says "How many more...?"  They know instantly that it's the "match up game" which helps them understand how to set up the problem.

The children just finished writing their first unedited story about their summer.  This writing activity help to get a glimpse on exactly what skills that they need and where they are at in the writing cycle.

Our class also works together as a team to earn letters for a special privilege.  They are learning that when they choose appropriate behaviors, work hard, and do their best that they will be rewarded.  On Friday we finally earned popcorn and a 10-minute movie entitled "Getting Along with Others- A Wigglebottom Story."  The students have now chosen to work for the privilege of bringing their favorite stuffed animal to school so they can read to it during our reading time.
