    The Memory Project

The Memory Project pairs artists around the world with children in need; artists draw the children's portraits which are returned back to the child as a keepsake, showing them how others care about them and giving them hope. According to the website, since 2004, more than  100,000 portraits were created for children in 43 countries. This year, Shickley 8th graders Madeline Kamler and Brooklynn Nelson took the Memory Project challenge and drew Mishutka, a child from a Russian orphanage. The entire 8th grade class did a unit on portrait drawing, and learned more about the challenges that may face our Memory Project child in Russia. However, the only information we have about Mishutka is his age and that he liked red, so both girls included that color in their drawings for him. We also learned about how art can impact the world around us, and about other portrait artists. These portraits will be delivered to the child in Russia in late March/early April. Thanks to Maddie and Brooke for volunteering their time and sharing their talents!
