HIGH SCHOOL SPANISH
SPANISH I: The goal of Spanish I is to increase
vocabulary, improve speaking skills, practice listening and
reading comprehension skills, and develop writing skills in
Spanish. Cultural activities of Spanish-speaking countries
are also included. The basic units of study involve words
and activities dealing with the family, clothing, body,
school, food, house and different places, as well as
information involving basic life functions and interests.
The goal is to learn as much vocabulary relating to those
units as possible, using many different types of learning
skills and activities. We also try to master approximately
200 verbs in the present tense through the use of many
cumulative tests. If a person wants to use a language, then
the basic need is to know as many vocabulary words as
possible, so this is the main emphasis of our Spanish
program. A vocabulary notebook, with many words and
pictures, is provided to help the students learn and review
this vocabulary throughout the year.
SPANISH II: The goal is to increase and improve the goals
of Spanish I, plus to learn to communicate using a variety
of different verb tenses. Instead of learning many more new
words, the emphasis is on the review of the countless words
from Spanish I, trying to get them embedded better in the
mind. The vocabulary book provided in Spanish I continues to
be valuable for review. After a month review of the present
tense forms of verbs, we begin to learn how to conjugate
other tenses of the same verbs that were presented in
Spanish I: the past tense (both preterit and imperfect), the
progressive tenses (both present and past), the perfect
tenses (both present and past), the future tense, the
conditional tense and the command mood. Throughout the year
there is a review of nouns and other words from Spanish I.
“Destinos,” an incredibly interesting 52 episode (25
minutes each) “soap opera” video program is also watched
during the year as an aid to understand better the Spanish
that is spoken by native Spanish speakers. Every class has
thoroughly enjoyed the well-written twists and turns of the
intriguing story of “Destinos.”
JUNIOR HIGH SPANISH
The seventh and eighth grade students are divided into two
sections. During the school year, each section rotates each
quarter with classes in Spanish, computer, art and health.
Building upon the foundation that was begun in the
elementary program, vocabulary and verbalization is repeated
and increased by using a variety of games, songs and
activities.
ELEMENTARY SPANISH
The elementary students in grades 3-6 take introductory
classes to Spanish, with an emphasis on building vocabulary
by using games, songs, and repetitive and cumulative
activities.
