The first graders mixed baking soda and vinegar together in a plastic bottle with a balloon attached.  They were very excited when the reaction caused the balloon to fill up. (Lots of screaming!) The students learned that carbon dioxide is in pop and that it makes a lot of bubbles.  They also had a chance to look into a microscope and a hand lens.  Our week has been full of learning the diagraphs th, she, wh, ch, and ph.  They know the action as well as the sounds for each one.  We are currently working on ew, qu, ou, ar, ur, ay, ai, and or.  By working on these letter combinations early, the students have ample time to learn and use what they know before the end of the year.

We have finished working on the Smart Start in the Math Connects. The students are learning how to spell their number words and are figuring out what a pattern unit is in each pattern.  During morning corner, one of the things they are learning is how to spell the days of the week.  We have 'tricks' to help us remember each one and they are catching on quickly.
