First grade news!

The first graders have been very busy this week.   We went to a program sponsored by the Geneva Arts Council on Monday.  The students learned about the history of the symbols of our Nebraska flag through original music performed on various instruments.  In grammar they practiced using exclamation points and question marks.  Blends, such as gl, cl, pl, etc, have been our primary focus in phonics.  In reading the first graders looked for the problem and solution in stories (plot).  I have been writing stories and having the students edit my stories during writer's workshop.  Students discovered which words always need a capital letter.  We learned how to look up words in a big dictionary with the help of a partner.  We are now centered around subtraction in math.  One activity that we always do everyday is to subtract 1, add 1, subtract 10, and add 10 to a number.  We are trying to learn how to do that without the use of a hundred chart now, which is far more challenging.
