Successful students know how to write well. Writer's workshop prepares the students by teaching them how and what to write about. They learn that editing their stories is a huge part of writing. In the first grade classroom students are required to use and apply what has been taught by helping their writing partner edit and improve his / her story. They are required to make at least one change before they can conference with the teacher. This is definitely a learning process as they often need another conference with their friend. I love that it holds both partners accountable for their learning as one of the first grade goals is to develop independent learners.
I have seen great conversations take place as they will review our writing workshop notes on what has been taught. Several of my students have said that this is the best part of the day!!
