The first grade students enjoyed using their own hand lens and magnifying glass to discover all of the veins and marks on their leaf.  Our budding scientists discussed and drew what they observed using their senses.  Later on this week, we plan to make tornadoes with pop bottles.  In math they are extending patterns, learning how to write their number words to twenty, and learning different math strategies to solve harder math facts.  In phonics they have learned the sounds and actions to sh, ch, ph, wh, and th.  We have also introduced -ck, ur, ou, ar, and ai.  I like to give the students plenty of time to practice doing the actions and saying the sounds of these letter clusters so that we aren't overwhelmed when we actually have to learn and apply those sounds in our reading curriculum.
